The Jefferson County Quorum Court held its monthly committee meeting Tuesday night, with county road funding and staffing emerging as one of the main topics of discussion.
Several members, including Justice Alfred Carroll, said they want to table a measure that would eliminate certain positions within the county road department while increasing salaries for remaining employees.
Carroll said he is concerned that approving the measure could set a precedent for other county departments to request similar changes.
However, Justice Jimmy Fisher said that issue should not be part of the discussion.
Fisher said the focus should be on retaining qualified employees who can help address the county’s road conditions. He also noted that road repairs cannot move forward without funding being properly appropriated by the court.
Despite the debate, the measure was approved by the committee and forwarded to the full quorum court for consideration. The full court is scheduled to meet next Monday night.
