After more than 30 years of service to the citizens of Jefferson County, longtime Circuit Clerk Flora Cook-Bishop has announced she will not seek re-election and plans to retire at the end of her current term on December 31, 2026.

Cook-Bishop, who began her career in the Circuit Clerk’s Office in 1988, has held multiple roles—including years as Chief Deputy—before her election as Circuit Clerk. Over the course of her tenure, she has overseen significant modernization within the office, including the introduction of new technologies that streamlined juror selection and improved public access to filings and jury administration.

“I have worked with an exceptional team to improve customer service at every counter, safeguard the public records entrusted to our care, modernize access to filings and jury administration, and strengthen transparency and accountability in our day-to-day operations,” Cook-Bishop said in her announcement. “I am deeply proud of the progress we have made together.”

Cook-Bishop emphasized that office operations will continue without interruption for the remainder of her term and pledged that constituent service will remain the office’s top priority.

Looking ahead, Cook-Bishop offered her personal endorsement of Connie Compton to serve as Jefferson County’s next Circuit Clerk.

Compton, a lifelong Jefferson County resident, brings years of experience in government and public service. Cook-Bishop praised her leadership, fiscal responsibility, and commitment to accessibility and customer care, calling her the “right choice to lead this office forward.”

“I believe Connie’s proven judgment, fiscal responsibility, and dedication to accessibility and customer care make her the right choice to lead this office forward, ensuring continuity of trusted service for our citizens,” Cook-Bishop said.
