An inmate at the Varner Unit was shot by a correctional officer Thursday morning after attempting to escape, according to a spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
Officials said the inmate, who was on field duty at the time, attempted to flee the area. A correctional officer fired two shots, striking the inmate before he could get beyond the secure perimeter.
The inmate was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical staff are assessing his injuries. As of Thursday afternoon, the inmate is alive, according to the spokesperson.
Prison officials said additional details, including the inmate’s identity and condition, will be released after the investigation is further along.
