Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a solemn statement Wednesday following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, calling the killing “a cowardly act of evil” and offering condolences to his family.

“America witnessed a cowardly act of evil today,” Sanders said. “To Charlie and his family — well done, good and faithful servant. America is better because of you.”

The remarks came in the wake of a shocking incident that has rattled the nation.

On September 10, Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and one of the most prominent voices in conservative politics, was fatally shot while speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The shooting occurred shortly after noon as Kirk was addressing the audience during the first stop of his “American Comeback Tour.” Witnesses said the crowd was stunned when a single gunshot rang out, striking Kirk in the neck as he stood on stage. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities initially detained one person near the event but later confirmed the individual was not connected to the shooting. As of late Tuesday, the suspect remained at large, and federal and state investigators were assisting local police in the search.

The assassination has drawn widespread condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum. President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, congressional leaders from both parties, and governors across the country have denounced the killing as an attack on free speech and civil discourse. The House oversight committee paused its work for a moment of silence in Kirk’s honor, while statehouses in Arizona, Texas, and Florida lowered flags to half-staff.

International figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, also expressed condolences and called for Americans to unite against political violence.

For many conservatives, Kirk was a defining voice of his generation. Since founding Turning Point USA in 2012, he had become a fixture on college campuses and in political media, advocating for limited government, free markets, and traditional values. His death leaves a void in the conservative movement and raises concerns about the growing threat of politically motivated violence.

Governor Sanders, a longtime ally of conservative causes, reflected on Kirk’s legacy in her statement, praising his dedication to faith, family, and country.

“To Charlie and his family — well done, good and faithful servant,” she said. “America is better because of you.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward. In the meantime, tributes to Kirk continue to pour in from around the world as Americans mourn the loss of a political voice silenced in an act of violence that has shocked the nation.
