A partnership between Drew County and the City of Monticello will soon bring major road improvements to Lake Monticello and the Saline River public access, thanks to a $157,500 grant from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Marine Fuel Tax Program.

The funding will be used to re-chip and seal two access roads to Lake Monticello — Hunger Run Road and Harris Road — as well as Ozment Bluff Road, which leads to Saline River public access. The goal is to have the work completed during the first quarter of 2026.

Drew County Judge Jessie Griffin applied for the grant and received official notice of the award this week. The funding comes through a 75/25 Marine Tax grant program, requiring local entities to provide a match for a portion of the cost.

“The City and County will work together on the matching funds because this lake access is vital for citizens using amenities at the lake,” Judge Griffin said.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission confirmed that they will begin the agreement process soon so the project can move forward on schedule.
