Drew County Judge Jessie Griffin told the Quorum Court this week that the county has more than $247,000 in uncollected solid waste bills.
He said county officials are working to get those cleaned and he hopes to have a better report next month.
According to the Advance Monticellonian newspaper, Grilffin said there are three companies working to expand broadband internet access in the county and talks are continuing to try and keep costs low for residents.
Griffin also announced that the old Class 1 landfill has been completed and the county plans to sell the property. The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality restrictions will bar any type of housing being constructed on the property, and there can be no logging, land clearing, excavation or any activity that would disturb or compromise the landfill’s final cover.
In new business, the Quorum Court approved an ordinance authorizing the Sheriff’s Department to purchase a new K-9 unit.
Sheriff Tim Nichols said the money to buy the vehicle which is priced at $71,539 is already available in his office so that no county money will be needed.
