The Desha County Sheriff’s Office is proud to introduce its newest addition to the team: K-9 Yoshi, an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois born in Budapest, Hungary. Yoshi brings advanced training and critical skills that will greatly enhance the Office’s capabilities in public safety and law enforcement.
K-9 Yoshi was trained by Von Klein Stein Working Dogs, a respected training facility based in North Little Rock. His handler, Deputy Austin Freeman, partnered with Yoshi to complete four weeks of intensive training. Together, they earned full certification as a working K-9 Team, capable of performing search and rescue, criminal apprehension, and drug detection.
What makes this addition especially meaningful is the support behind it. The entire cost of Yoshi and his training was covered through private donations made to the Sheriff’s Contribution Fund — a testament to the community’s investment in public safety. Additionally, Diamond Dog Food of Dumas has generously committed to providing food for Yoshi free of charge, and veterinary care will also be covered by private contributions.
“This is an awesome tool that we have been able to add to our tool belt, thanks to the overwhelming support of our Office by our constituents and concerned citizens who share our interest in public safety,” said Sheriff Mitch Grant. “Thank you to those who assisted us, and for your support in trying to make Desha County a safer place to live and raise a family. I appreciate Deputy Freeman’s willingness to devote the time and effort necessary to be a certified and successful K-9 Team for our County.”
K-9 Yoshi and Deputy Freeman will now begin active service, working together to help make Desha County a safer, more secure community for all.
