Dallas County Sheriff Mike Knoedl is encouraging the public to be cooperative and respectful during traffic stops, following several incidents that disrupted ongoing investigations.
“Recording a traffic stop is perfectly fine,” Knoedl said. “However, if you interfere with an investigation, you will be arrested.” He noted that two individuals were recently arrested in situations that could have been avoided, had they not impeded officers.
The sheriff also addressed a growing trend where individuals are requesting a supervisor during routine stops, often citing social media videos. “There is no law requiring law enforcement to call a supervisor during a simple traffic stop,” he said. “What starts as a citation can quickly escalate into an arrest when people refuse to comply.”
Knoedl urged drivers to comply with officers, provide the necessary documentation, and use the courts to dispute any citations. “Being respectful can go a long way,” he added. “You may be surprised at how respectful officers are in return.”
Knoedl added that the Sheriff’s Office is continuing its speed enforcement mobilization through July 31 in an effort to reduce high-speed crashes. Officers are stepping up patrols across the county to monitor and slow down traffic.
“Most serious injury accidents are caused by excessive speed,” Knoedl said. “We want to remind everyone to watch their speed and always wear a seatbelt.”
Despite a busy weekend of enforcement, the sheriff reported no serious traffic accidents over the recent holiday.
Law enforcement also made a number of arrests during the recent DWI Mobilization campaign. Offenses ranged from DWI and drug possession to outstanding warrants and other criminal charges.
