A Pine Bluff man charged with murder in connection with an August 2024 shooting will appear in court later this month.
Martavius Keshawn Jackson is scheduled to appear before Judge Rob Wyatt on Nov. 18 at 8:30 a.m. in Jefferson County Circuit Court. Jackson is charged with murder in the first degree and theft by receiving, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Pine Bluff Police Department.
According to the affidavit, on August 12, 2024, around 12:05 a.m., Pine Bluff police officers responded to reports of gunshots in the area of West 26th Avenue and South Orange Street. Officers found a man later identified as Timothy Cannady lying on the ground near the Arbor Pines apartment complex. Cannady was unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the investigation, police learned that Jackson had called 911 stating he intended to turn himself in for the shooting. Officers located him shortly afterward and took him into custody.
A search of Jackson’s person revealed a Springfield Arms XD 9mm handgun with serial number XD811544 in his right front pocket. The weapon was loaded with a magazine containing five rounds, and a spent round was lodged in the chamber. Further investigation showed the gun had been reported stolen from White Hall, Arkansas, on Feb. 2, 2021, during a breaking or entering incident. The firearm was valued at about $300.
Jackson was transported to the Pine Bluff Police Department, where he was read his Miranda rights. He invoked his right to an attorney but later stated that he “should not be going to jail because he called the police” and claimed he shot Cannady in self-defense, according to Detective Sergeant Keith Banks.
