The Cleveland County School District has voted to seek a tax increase to pay for a new gym.
According to the Cleveland County Herald, the board voted 5-2 to hold an election in November to pay for the project, which is estimated to cost $12 million.
The board is asked for a six-mill increase which, according to projections from the district’s financial advisor, will generate about $10.366 million in construction funds.
Board Member Helen Browning-Grice, one of two members who voted against the November election, said she preferred a March election so board members would have more time to explain it to voters.
The district will have to file paperwork with the County Clerk’s Office by Sept. 6 in order to get the issue on the November ballot.
