The Cleveland County Quorum Court has set a special meeting Sept. 22 to decide on a replacement for County Judge Jimmy Cummings.

Cummings died in a one-vehicle accident Aug. 28 on Highway 79 in Kingsland.

According to the Cleveland County Herald, Justice of the Peace Donnie Herring, who had been selected as moderator of the quorum court, that he had been in contact with the Arkansas Association of Counties about procedures to replace Cummings.

Herring said he was told that the county must first publish a notice in a newspaper announcing the date and time the quorum court will meet to declare the judge’s office vacant.

After that, they can formally declare the office vacant and select someone to fill the post.

Current members of the quorum court are not eligible, even if they resign, and spouses and other relatives are also not eligible.

Whoever is appointed can not be elected to the office after the appointment ends and cannot succeed themselves.
