Charges filed in April accident that resulted in death of White Hall basketball coach

A 36-year-old Pine Bluff man who was involved in a traffic accident in April that resulted in the death of a second man has been charged in the case.

Prosecutors say Darrion Williams was “in actual physical control of a vehicle while intoxicated’ while driving a 2015 GMC Sierra northbound on South Hazel Street at 11:01 p.m. April 12.

Pine Bluff Police Traffic Officer Joe Anderson reported that Williams’ vehicle crossed the center line and struck the front left side of a 2016 Nissan Altima driven by Matthew Willams, who was southbound at the time.

Matthew Williams, (no relation to Darrion Williams) was the head coach of the White Hall boys basketball team, and was killed in the accident.

Anderson reported that South Hazel Street runs north and south through the City of Pine Bluff, and the posted speed limit is 40 miles-per-hour.

According to medical records obtained from Jefferson Regional Hospital, Darrion Williams’ blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was measured at 0.28.

Prosecuting Attorney S. Kyle Hunter has charged Darrion Williams with negligent homicide and with DWI and notes that Williams has been convicted or found guilty of more than 1 but less than 4 prior felonies.

Bond for Darrion Williams was set at $75,000 cash only. He was booked into the jail Wednesday.
