Arkansas State Police Urge Drivers to Prepare for Hazardous Winter Weather

As winter weather is forecast to impact Arkansas on Friday and into the weekend, the Arkansas State Police (ASP) are urging motorists to avoid travel when possible and use extreme caution if they must be on the roads.

With bitter cold, freezing rain, and snow expected to create hazardous driving conditions, ASP officials say staying home whenever possible is the safest option. Doing so helps reduce traffic crashes, protects first responders, and keeps roadways clear for highway crews working to treat icy surfaces.

For those who must travel, ASP is reminding drivers to take the following precautions:

  • Reduce speed and avoid sudden steering, acceleration, or braking.

  • Increase the distance between your vehicle and others.

  • Begin slowing down much earlier than usual when approaching intersections, bridges, and exit ramps, which tend to freeze first.

Motorists are also encouraged to prepare an emergency kit before heading out. Recommended items include extra clothing, blankets, water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a phone charger, an ice scraper, and basic first-aid supplies. Keeping your gas tank at least half full and making sure tires are properly inflated can also improve safety in winter conditions.

ASP troopers will be deployed across the state to assist motorists in need. For non-emergency assistance or to report road hazards, drivers can dial *ASP (*277) from their cellphone to be connected to the nearest ASP Troop headquarters. The Arkansas State Police has 12 Troop headquarters statewide, each with its own telecommunications dispatch center.

The *ASP feature is a four-digit speed-dial option implemented in January 2022 and is available on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon cellphones operating in Arkansas. Officials stress that *ASP should be used only for non-emergency situations. For emergencies involving law enforcement, medical needs, or fire services, drivers should continue to dial 9-1-1, which takes priority over *ASP calls.
