The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF) is now accepting applications for scholarships for the Spring 2026 semester, offering financial support to single mothers and fathers pursuing higher education.
Eligible applicants can apply online at aspsf.org/scholarships, with the application deadline set for Feb. 1. Scholarships are available to single parents working toward an associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or professional certificate.
Award amounts range from $400 to $1,600, depending on the number of credit hours in which a student is enrolled. Unlike traditional scholarships, funds are sent directly to recipients and may be used to cover essential living and education-related expenses, including rent, child care, transportation, utilities, and school costs.
ASPSF officials say the program is designed to remove financial barriers that often prevent single parents from completing college and entering stable, family-supporting careers.
In 2025, ASPSF awarded 24 scholarships totaling $33,800 to single parents in Jefferson County. Among those recipients was Herman McMurray III, an engineering major at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, who hopes to one day own his own engineering firm or construction company.
“My goal is to become a highly skilled engineer who excels in both technical knowledge and practical application,” McMurray said. “I want to work on innovative projects that improve infrastructure and benefit communities. Ultimately, I want to give back to my community by creating job opportunities and mentoring young people interested in the trades.”
Across the state, ASPSF awarded more than 1,300 scholarships totaling $1.9 million in 69 Arkansas counties and Bowie County, Texas in 2025. That marks a significant increase from 2024, when 832 scholarships totaling $1.2 million were awarded. Program leaders credit the growth to the continued support of donors, businesses, schools, organizations, and foundations committed to expanding educational opportunities for single parents.
In addition to financial assistance, ASPSF provides a support network to help recipients succeed. The organization offers mentoring, career guidance, and educational workshops aimed at building academic confidence and long-term stability.
To qualify, applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and must not yet have earned a bachelor’s degree. Students must be enrolled in at least one three-credit course, maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, meet income requirements, and actively participate in program communication and workshops.
ASPSF accepts applications three times a year for spring, summer, and fall semesters. A full list of eligibility requirements and application details can be found at aspsf.org/scholarships.
