Arkansas Law Blocks Recall Elections for Jefferson County Officials Amid Growing Frustrations

As frustrations grow among Jefferson County residents over ongoing tensions within county government, many have been asking whether members of the Jefferson County Quorum Court can be removed through a recall election.

According to the Association of Arkansas Counties, the answer is no — Arkansas law does not allow for recall elections for justices of the peace or any county-elected officials.

Citizens have expressed frustration over months of political gridlock, including disputes between County Judge Gerald Robinson and quorum court members that left the county without a budget early in 2025 and caused bills and vendor payments to stall.

In response to numerous calls, emails, and social media inquiries, Deltaplex News reached out to the Association of Arkansas Counties for clarification. Lindsey French, legal counsel for the Association, confirmed that no such recall mechanism exists under current state law.

“There is no process in Arkansas law to recall a justice of the peace or any county elected official,” French said. “The only option of removal is an order of the court or a declaration of vacancy under 14-14-1308. It would take a constitutional amendment to create a recall process for county elected officials.”

With no recall process available, Jefferson County voters will have to wait until the next election cycle to make changes to their county leadership at the ballot box.
