The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) is reminding political candidates and their supporters that placing campaign signs on highway rights of way is illegal under state law.

According to ARDOT, only official directional, informational, and regulatory highway signs are permitted on state-owned highway property. Any unauthorized signs, including campaign materials, will be removed by ARDOT Area Maintenance Office personnel.

“It is important to keep highway right of ways clear for the safety of both drivers and road workers,” said ARDOT Director Jared Wiley.

ARDOT crews will remove any yard signs found on highway rights of way and will contact the owners of large billboard-style signs to arrange for removal. Owners may retrieve removed signs during regular business hours at their nearest ARDOT Area Maintenance Office.

ARDOT officials encourage candidates and supporters to ensure signs are placed only on private property with the owner’s permission.
