Jimmy Dale Adair of Rye, longtime foreman of the Cleveland County Road Department, has been appointed to serve as Cleveland County judge, filling the unexpired term of the late Jimmy Cummings.
The Cleveland County Quorum Court unanimously approved Adair’s appointment during a special called meeting Monday night, according to the Cleveland County Herald.
Adair and Cummings were political opponents in the 2022 county judge race, but the two later developed a friendship. After taking office, Cummings appointed Adair as road foreman.
In anticipation of unforeseen circumstances, Cummings had outlined a line of succession for his office. Adair was the first named in that succession plan, which took effect following Cummings’ death on Aug. 28.
Adair will hold the position until the end of the current term on Dec. 31, 2026. Under state law, he is not eligible to run for the office when the term concludes.
