The Cleveland County School District will utilize AMI days for school assignments on Thursday, December 8 and Friday December 9 due to a flu outbreak according to a letter from Superintendent Craig Dupuy.

The letter states that over the past few days the district has seen a significant spike in positive flu cases within the student body and staff, and it has reached a point where a decision had to be made to continue normal school activities with major disruptions, or to close the school and utilize AMI days in order to sanitize the school and break up spread of the virus.

The letter also says that safety, security, and health are some of the focused priorities at the Cleveland County School District and with so many certified staff members out with the flu, it becomes increasingly hard to supervise students both in and out of the classroom. With teachers and support staff testing positive for the flu at such a high rate, even the remaining staff on campus that are volunteering to take on extra students and watching large groups of students at one time becomes unmanageable.

The letter states that students are expected to work on Day 1 and 2 AMI packets or in Google Classroom as directed by their classroom teacher. Grading for all school work will take place and students will be held accountable for the work assigned by the teachers. Students will have up to 3 days after Monday’s initial return to turn in all work for grading.

All teachers and staff that are healthy will report to work on Thursday to help wipe down and disinfect their own classrooms, help the custodial staff disinfect hallways and restrooms, and will also monitor school emails for student questions regarding AMI work.

All buildings will be closed on Friday and will not reopen until Monday, December 12 at regular school time.

The only school activities that will remain scheduled at this time are the boys and girls basketball games. All other activities will be postponed and rescheduled as soon as possible, according to the letter.
