Pine Bluff Mayor Shirley Washington and members of the City Council on Tuesday hosted a press conference encouraging residents to support the extension of the five-eights Go Forward Pine Bluff tax for another seven years, and vote for an additional three-eight cent tax that will be devoted to public safety.

Voters will go to the polls to decide the two issues on May 9 and Washington opened the press conference by saying this.

The current five-eighth cent tax has been collected for the past six years and will sunset next year and Washington said officials are starting an effort to renew it to look at the money that will be available for projects that are currently underway.

“We want to make sure we cover all our bases,” she said.

The Mayor also talked about the housing incentive program for public safety workers that will allow them to receive money to buy or renovate houses. Firefighter Mozell Gibson spoke about how the program helped him.

Also speaking was Third-Ward Council Member Lanette Frazier.
