On Monday night, the Pine Bluff City Council approved two resolutions dealing with construction on the former public library building that will become the Kevin Collins Police Training Center.

Carson and Associates submitted the lowest bid to work on renovating new council chambers and Allison + Partners submitted the lowest bid on converting the first floor of the building to a police training and conference center.

After the meeting, Council Member Bruce Lockett spoke about the actions.

Also approved was a contract for services with Mediavision 2020 LLC which is providing media services for the Advancing Health Literacy Program. The company is being paid $18,000 with the money coming from a grant. The contract calls for the company to do social media marketing.

An ordinance repealing a section of the City Code of Ordinances and eliminating auxiliary police officers was also approved as were resolutions selling city owned property to individuals.

The properties that were sold were located at 2007 Chestnut Street, 2120 Pine Street, in the 5400 block of West 14th Avenue and the 5400 block of West 15th Avenue.

Mayor Shirley Washington also announced that Leanita Hughes has been hired as Group Violence Intervention Center effective on or before Jan. 31, 2023. A graduate of UAPB with a degree in Criminal Justice, Hughes has a graduate degree in Public Administration from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and has 20+ years of work history and a proven track record in the fields of homeless services, juvenile justice and domestic violence.
