Contests Aim to Raise Awareness About Environmental Impact of Human Activities

Registration Open Through Feb. 23; Finalists Advance to April 13 Showcase PINE BLUFF, Ark. — The ARTx3 Campus is launching a new initiative to raise regional awareness about the environmental impact of human activities: the Delta Upcycle Challenge (D.U.C.) Project. The campus endeavors to foster collaboration among youth across the Arkansas Delta through two competitions: an upcycle mini-sculpture contest and an upcycle fashion show. This effort encourages creative expression that contributes to innovative solutions, ultimately reducing waste entering landfills
and promoting a cleaner, more beautiful tomorrow, explained ARTx3 Outreach Coordinator J. Tyler Lewis.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to view what is discarded in a unique way,” Lewis said. “A lot of the items that we trash can be reused and repurposed if only we allow our creative minds to explore. In return, that creativity can benefit ourselves, our neighbors, and the community. Also, having your work displayed at an accredited museum is a big accomplishment and looks great on resumes.”

The D.U.C. Project is open to students in Arkansas, Ashley, Bradley, Chicot, Cleveland, Desha, Drew, Grant, Jefferson, Lee, Lincoln, Monroe, Phillips and Prairie counties. Participation in the sculpture
contest is open to students in grades 9-12, while the fashion show is open to those enrolled in college, university or trade school.

The top 20 entries in both competitions will advance to a showcase and receive certificates. Winners from first to fifth place in the sculpture contest will display their work on the campus, with the top three receiving a trophy. The first-place winner in the fashion show will also display their work at the campus, with the top three also receiving a trophy.

The showcase is open to the public and set for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 13 – Earth Day – at the ARTx3 Campus, 701 S. Main St.

The registration deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23. Entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, March 29,
via the ARTx3’s website. There is no cost to participate.
