U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, a Republican from Hot Springs, has won re-election to Arkansas’ 4th Congressional District.
Westerman, 50, returns to Congress for a third two-year term. He defeated Democratic candidate Hayden Shamel, a teacher from Hot Springs, and Libertarian candidate Tom Canada.
Talk Business & Politics called the race for Westerman with 4 percent of precincts reporting. With 94 percent of precincts reporting, the vote totals early Wednesday were:
Westerman: 132,253 – 67 percent
Shamel: 61,718 – 31 percent
Canada: 3,828 – 2 percent
Westerman, a professional engineer and forester, was a state representative before he was first elected to Congress in 2014. He’s chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Committee on Natural Resources.
Westerman graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1990 and earned a master’s degree from Yale University in 2001.
