Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin has rejected a state-wide, citizen led referendum that was pushing to stop the implementation of the LEARNS Act.

The referendum was started by by CAPES (Citizens for Arkansas Public Education and Students). The organization worked to gather signatures saying t

“The law will also have a negative impact on the communities surrounding the public schools. CAPES believes in the value and equity of public education. CAPES also believes the will of the people was ignored when the law was passed. Therefore, the organization will collect signatures from registered voters across Arkansas to put a veto referendum on the 2024 ballot.”

Organizers also said that they will make necessary changes and try to submit the referendum again.

Griffin said that the referendum failed to meet legal standards and couldn’t be certified. In his statement, he says

“I have determined that the popular name and ballot title failed to explain the impact of a vote for or against the measure and failed to adequately summarize the LEARNS Act.”

CAPES is planning to host rallies across the state on Thursday, April 27th.
