The city of Pine Bluff Advancing Health and Literacy Program held its Step Into Summer Challenge on Saturday. The event included a 3.6-mile walk/run at Saracen Landing. Those who completed the run in under 30 minutes received a first-place medal. There was a total of ten participants that completed the challenge and those who completed the entire 3.6 miles were given a second-place medal and all those who participated and ran received a bronze medal.

The AHLP is a health literacy initiative by the city of Pine Bluff that is funded by the Office of Minority Health Department. The federally funded organization focuses on covid-19 protocols and educating the community on important health conditions that affect them. AHLP also launched a Get Active Pine Bluff campaign that started in 2022 to help the community not only learn about health literacy but also get active.

Scott Solomon, the project Outreach Coordinator for the AHLP helped coordinate and attended the event. Deltaplex News spoke with Solomon Monday and he was asked about the importance of the event and he gave his thoughts.

He then went on to highlight one of the moments he thinks the city and community should continue to do to promote fitness.

Those that participated included John Proctor, Director of Student Recruitment at Southeast Arkansas College, and Teki Hunt who is the Director of 4-H Youth Programs and SAFHS Recruitment with the Department of Human Sciences at The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff among other community participants.

AHLP featured fruits and vegetables and other healthy options to participants provided by the Pine Bluff Farmer’s Market.
