Grant County leaders are already preparing for America’s 250th anniversary celebration, with organizers planning multiple events across the county leading up to Independence Day activities in 2026.
Sheridan Mayor Cain Nattin recently discussed planning efforts during a Grant County Chamber of Commerce breakfast, where he said local officials and volunteers are working to develop activities intended to involve communities throughout Grant County.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate America’s people and culture while also bringing our communities together,” Nattin said. “We want this to be something everyone across Grant County can enjoy and be proud of.”
Planning efforts are being coordinated through a committee that includes representatives from Sheridan, Prattsville, Leola, Poyen and surrounding areas. Participants include Nattin, Grant County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Hurtt, Jeff Vance, Cortney Harrison, Madi Smith, Skyler Smith and Alden Lucas, along with additional volunteers.
Organizers are planning several fundraising activities to support the celebration, including community bingo nights scheduled for May 29 at the Sheridan Country Club.
Activities associated with the celebration are expected to begin July 2 with Movies at the Park at the Sheridan Recreation Center, followed July 3 by Poyen’s annual fireworks celebration.
The largest event is scheduled for July 4 in downtown Sheridan and will include a parade and festival surrounding the Grant County Courthouse. Organizers said the free event will feature historical exhibits and family activities commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
Events will continue that evening in Prattsville with a fireworks show at the community center sponsored by the local fire department.
Organizers are also developing a “Stars, Stripes and Stamps” summer challenge passport program intended to encourage residents to visit communities and historic locations throughout Grant County. Participants will collect stamps at designated locations and completed passports can be entered into prize drawings.
Nattin said the program is intended to provide families with an opportunity to learn more about Grant County history while recognizing the nation’s milestone birthday.
As planning efforts continue, organizers are encouraging residents interested in volunteering, sponsorship opportunities or contributing ideas to contact Sheridan City Hall or the Grant County Chamber of Commerce.
“We want this Celebration to represent all of Grant County,” Nattin said. “Everyone has ideas and opinions, and we want people to come together and help make this something special for our communities.”
