The University of Arkansas at Monticello has joined a statewide effort to combat opioid-related deaths, becoming the 11th campus in Arkansas to participate in the “One Pill Can Kill” initiative.
Tim Griffin announced the expansion during a press conference alongside UAM Chancellor Peggy Doss, highlighting the program’s focus on education and prevention.
“The University of Arkansas at Monticello is the 11th campus in Arkansas to join the One Pill Can Kill initiative, and I am grateful for their partnership as we continue to address the threat of illicit opioids across the state,” Griffin said.
As part of the initiative, student leaders are being trained to recognize the dangers of illicit opioids, identify the signs of an overdose, and administer naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, in emergency situations.
“Today we are training student leaders on how to avoid accidental overdoses, how to recognize the signs of an overdose, and how to administer Narcan in the event of an overdose,” Griffin said. “The knowledge and awareness these students are receiving could help save lives here on the UAM campus and in the surrounding community.”
University officials said the initiative aligns with their commitment to student safety and community well-being.
“The University of Arkansas at Monticello proudly supports the ‘One Pill Can Kill’ initiative and commends Attorney General Tim Griffin for highlighting this urgent issue,” Doss said. “Ensuring the safety of our students, campus and statewide community remains our top priority, and raising awareness about the risks of illicit opioids is key to that goal. By providing students with knowledge, we can help prevent unnecessary tragedies and loss of life.”
The “One Pill Can Kill” campaign is part of a broader statewide effort aimed at reducing opioid-related harm through education, awareness and access to overdose-reversal resources.
