A $50,000 bond was set Wednesday for a Jefferson County man who fled from law enforcement officers twice, and when he was caught, had drugs in his possession.

Jefferson County Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Michael James, 31, with felony fleeing, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Reading from an affidavit from Sheriff’s Investigator Zachary Sturdvant, Deputy Prosecutor Shana Alexander said on Feb. 10, a sheriff’s deputy was on Old Warren Road when he saw a man on a motorcycle that was traveling 53 miles-per-hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone.

Alexander said officers learned that James lived in the house where he had stopped the motorcycle and he was not located at that time.

James has more than four prior felony convictions and multiple misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear on traffic offenses. He also will be held on a parole hold with no bond pending a hearing.
