The Kingsland City Council voted during their last meeting to approve a request from the Kingsland Volunteer Fire Department to buy eight sets of new turnout gear.
According to the Cleveland County Herald, the new turnouts will cost $26,332 and will replace current turnouts that were described as old and no longer providing the protection needed to fight a fire.
Turnouts are protective coats and pants made of durable fire-retardant material.
The newspaper reported that the fire department has the money available to pay for the turnouts without help from the city.
Fire Chief Tevin Mitchell also reported that the department has received no bids on an old firetruck it had put up for sale. The department was planning to sell the old truck and but a newer model used pumper truck. He said it would cost$10,000 to $12,000 to repair the old truck so that it could be sold while the department could buy a newer model for about $20,000.
No official decision was made on what to do with the old truck.
