On Saturday, February 7th, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) invites high school students and their families to explore a “New Year, New You” with the Golden Lions. Prospective students will meet members of faculty and current students. They will be introduced to university life, experience academic showcases, see performances by current students at UAPB, and have an opportunity to tour campus.
It is a great opportunity for students to visit the campus and get a feel for what being a “member of the Pride” is all about. This is the first step in becoming a member of the UAPB community. After visiting, students can apply for admission and submit their required transcripts and other documents.
The college that became the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was first proposed in 1873 and opened its doors in 1875 with the primary objective of educating black students to become teachers at black schools. The first class consisted of seven students. With slavery ending just a decade prior to the arrival of the first students, all were academically disadvantaged with low literacy and math skills.
The first African American student to earn a college degree in the state of Arkansas graduated from UAPB, then known as Branch College.
As the world continues to grow and evolve, UAPB also continues to change to meet new challenges and hopes to graduate many more community leaders.
