A 37-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday morning following a shooting at a residence along Highway 63, south of Calmer, according to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department.
Chief Deputy Gary Young said deputies received a report of a shooting at approximately 6:14 a.m. and responded to the residence, where they found an adult male who had been shot. Preliminary information indicated the victim was shot by his son, who lives in a camper located behind the main home.
Following the shooting, the suspect reportedly retreated into the camper and initially refused to respond to deputies’ attempts to communicate. As deputies began forcing entry into the camper, the suspect appeared at the door and was taken into custody without further incident.
Deputies arrested Jason Barnett, 37, on a charge of first-degree battery. Officials say the victim’s injuries were minor.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
