According to NOAA’s National Drought Monitor, Southeast Arkansas is in a moderate drought. This includes Jefferson and surrounding counties. The City of Camden in Ouachita County has similar drought conditions and, on December 22nd, their fire department had to battle a small wildfire. Fortunately, no homes were damaged.

As the New Year approaches and individuals begin to set off celebratory fireworks, residents are encouraged to think safety first. Make certain fireworks are not set off near dry grass, homes, or vehicles. Do not allow children to handle fireworks and do not handle fireworks while intoxicated.

When using fireworks, keep a reliable water source nearby. Before disposing of fireworks, soak them in water. Also soak any fireworks that failed to go off in water before throwing them away. Do not attempt to relight fireworks that did not ignite the first time.
