Arkansas law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols during the holiday season as part of a nationwide effort to crack down on impaired driving.

From Dec. 12, 2025, through Jan. 1, 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Arkansas Highway Safety Office and police agencies across the state will participate in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Officials say the winter holiday period is among the deadliest times of the year for impaired-driving crashes. Between 2019 and 2023, 4,931 people were killed in December crashes involving a drunk driver, according to federal data. In December 2023 alone, 1,038 people died in alcohol-related crashes — nearly 700 of them involving drivers with blood alcohol levels nearly twice the legal limit.

“Driving impaired is illegal, endangers everyone on the road and is never acceptable,” Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Col. Mike Hagar said. “Our troopers, local police and sheriff’s deputies will be out in full force this holiday season to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roads. We’re asking everyone to make smart choices, plan ahead and help ensure that every celebration ends safely. Drunk driving is 100% preventable.”

Law enforcement and safety officials are urging residents to plan a sober ride before attending any holiday gatherings. They recommend designating a sober driver, using a taxi or rideshare service or calling a friend for a ride. Those who see a suspected impaired driver are encouraged to report it to local law enforcement.
