The Cleveland County School District in Rison is proposing a 6-mill property tax increase to fund the construction of a new gymnasium and multi-use facility, as well as updates to portions of the elementary school.
Superintendent Davy King spoke with Deltaplex News on Tuesday about the proposal and what the district hopes to achieve with the additional funding.
King explained the process the district must complete in order to secure the $2.7 million in funding to support the project.
He also discussed the specific needs at the elementary school and outlined where the new gymnasium would be built if voters approve the millage increase.
King added that while people often distinguish between wants and needs, this project represents an absolute need for the school district. He also noted that the new gymnasium would serve a dual purpose, hosting not only school activities but also community events.
