Arkansas officials are encouraging residents to safely and anonymously dispose of unused or unwanted medications during the state’s annual Drug Take Back Day on Friday, Oct. 25.

The event is part of a statewide effort to prevent prescription drug misuse, accidental poisonings, and environmental contamination by providing secure disposal options.

According to the Arkansas Opioid Recovery Partnership (ARORP), a total of 28,764 pounds of medications were collected during the spring 2025 take-back event, bringing the statewide total to more than 329 tons of unused drugs since the program began in 2010.

“Arkansas Drug Take Back has become a powerful movement in uniting communities in the fight against substance misuse,” said Kirk Lane, director of ARORP. “It’s important that people take advantage of safe disposal and take the time to learn why these medications shouldn’t remain in their homes.”

Law enforcement agencies across Arkansas will set up temporary collection sites on Take Back Day, supplementing the more than 300 permanent drop boxes located at police departments, sheriff’s offices, and participating pharmacies throughout the state.

Residents can find the nearest collection site or permanent drop box location by visiting ARTakeBack.org.
