The Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office is rolling out the “Extreme Safety” campaign to ensure the safety of bikers and pedestrians across Arkansas roads.

This campaign will run from October 6-18 in conjunction with National Pedestrian Safety Month in hopes of addressing the biggest concerns that pedestrians and bikers face on Arkansas roadways.

Recent data shows that Arkansas reached a 10-year high in pedestrian fatalities in 2020 with 81 deaths. In 2023, there were 74 pedestrian fatalities

Urban areas count for 70% of pedestrian fatalities took place in urban areas and 78% of those deaths happened between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

“Many of us fail to realize that pedestrians and cyclists are often at higher risk on our roadways,” said Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Colonel Mike Hagar. “Whether walking, cycling or driving, every Arkansan can help make Arkansas a safer place for all road users by staying alert, following safety guidelines and taking responsibility for road safety.”

This new campaign will focus on delivering critical safety tips for motorists and vulnerable road users.

During the campaign, motorists will be given tips such as avoiding distractions, adhering to speed limits and being cautious at crosswalks.

Meanwhile, cyclists will be reminded of the importance of wearing helmets, checking their breaks, and following road rules.

Pedestrians will be encouraged to use sidewalks, cross at designated areas, and remain vigilant of their surroundings.
