Several hundred people turned out Saturday, Aug. 16, for the Pine Bluff Police Department’s Annual Fishing Derby at Martin Luther King Park, enjoying a day of fishing, food, and family fun.
The event featured games, prizes, a pie-eating contest, and goodie bags for senior adults. Dozens of Pine Bluff Police, Fire and Emergency Services, and Animal Control staff volunteered their time to help organize and run the derby.
“It’s a way to give back to the community in a big way,” said PBPD Public Information Specialist John Worthen. “People had a great time. It was neat to see kids catching fish for the first time. And for adults, watching young ones having so much fun was priceless.”
To ensure plenty of action at the pond, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission stocked more than 500 catfish ahead of the derby.
Worthen expressed appreciation to the community and partners who made the event possible. “We want to thank Game and Fish and everyone who came out to the event,” he said. “We are already looking forward to next year.”
