Sheriff Mitch Grant has formally announced his intention to seek another term as Desha County’s top law enforcement officer. Grant, who has served as sheriff since January 1, 2023, made the announcement in a press release Wednesday, calling the role “the highest privilege of my lifetime.”

Grant, a 30-year law enforcement veteran and retired Arkansas State Trooper, highlighted a number of accomplishments during his tenure, including securing more than $250,000 in state and federal grants. Those funds, along with a budget increase approved by the Quorum Court and donations from local citizens and businesses, have enabled the sheriff’s office to rebuild its patrol fleet, issue new standardized duty weapons, provide body armor and cameras for deputies, and establish both a K-9 unit and a soon-to-be-launched drone program.

According to Grant, these upgrades have contributed to a more than 50 percent reduction in property crimes and thefts across the county. He credited strong relationships with local police departments, a focus on holding violent offenders accountable, and partnerships with addiction recovery and mental health services for helping to improve public safety.

The sheriff also pointed to other initiatives under his leadership, such as creating a centralized 911 center, increasing specialized training for deputies, and implementing mentorship and safety programs in local schools.

Grant’s career includes service in the Arkansas Army National Guard, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Arkansas Tech University, and numerous awards, including the Arkansas Attorney General’s 2022 Desha County Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and the McGehee Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 “Man of the Year.” He has also served as an adjunct instructor for the University of Arkansas Criminal Justice Institute for 24 years and is a volunteer firefighter for the McGehee Fire Department.

“I have dedicated my entire adult life to public service,” Grant said. “We have made Desha County a safer place to live and raise a family, but there is more work to be done. I will always take pride in being ‘The People’s Sheriff.’”
