A joint initiative between Drew County and the City of Monticello will result in improved access to Lake Monticello and the Saline River, thanks to a $157,500 grant awarded through the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Marine Fuel Tax Program.

County Judge Jessie Griffin received official notification this week that the application for Fiscal Year 2026 funding was approved. The grant will fund chip and seal improvements to Hunger Run Road and Harris Road, both of which lead to Lake Monticello, as well as Ozment Bluff Road, which provides access to the Saline River.

The work is expected to begin in early 2026, with officials targeting the first quarter for construction.

The funding is part of a 75/25 cost-share grant program, with the remaining match to be shared by the city and county. The partnership underscores the importance of lake access for local citizens, particularly when it comes to enjoying city-maintained amenities at Lake Monticello.

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, an agreement process will begin soon to formalize the funding and begin preparing for the upcoming road work.
