Arkansas State Police Urge Drivers to Stay Calm Amid Rise in Road Rage Incidents

As temperatures climb this summer, the Arkansas State Police (ASP) are issuing a clear message to drivers across the state: Stay calm, stay cool, and avoid road rage.

With a noticeable rise in aggressive driving and road rage cases in recent years, ASP is emphasizing the importance of composure behind the wheel. So far in 2025, troopers have investigated over 440 incidents of road rage. Alarmingly, 153 of these involved the display of a weapon. Another 294 incidents were reported without weapons, but still posed serious safety risks.

The trend represents a continued increase from previous years. In 2024, ASP investigated 800 road rage cases—333 of which involved weapons. That’s nearly triple the number of total incidents reported in 2023, which saw just 284.

“Troopers understand that driving can be frustrating at times, but aggressive driving and road rage are not the answer,” said Col. Mike Hagar, Director of the Arkansas State Police. “We want everyone to arrive safely at their destination. Remember, road rage can lead to dangerous situations that put your life and the lives of others at risk.”

Tips to Prevent Road Rage

To help drivers stay safe this summer, ASP recommends following these key guidelines:

  • Don’t engage with aggressive drivers—even if they’ve made you angry or if you’ve unintentionally angered them.

  • Create distance between your vehicle and the aggressive driver as quickly and safely as possible.

  • Avoid eye contact, which can escalate tensions.

  • Never pull over to confront another driver; they may be armed.

  • Resist the urge to compete or retaliate, even if the other driver is clearly at fault.

  • Don’t take it personally—aggressive behavior may have nothing to do with you.

  • Move out of the way if someone is tailgating or driving aggressively.

  • Report threatening behavior to law enforcement. Call 911 in emergencies or *ASP (*277) for non-emergency situations.

ASP strongly encourages drivers to report road rage incidents, especially those that involve threats or reckless behavior. Quick action can help prevent further danger and hold offenders accountable.

“This summer, we’re asking all Arkansans to do their part by staying calm and courteous on the roads,” said Col. Hagar. “Your patience could save a life.”
