Fourth Ward Councilmember Steven Mays is the longest-serving member of the Pine Bluff City Council but a newcomer to politics wants to take his position.
Cassandra Dean, a graduate of Watson Chapel High School and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and a downtown business owner will challenge Mays in the May 24 Democratic primary.
On Friday, Dean was a guest on the Oldies 101.3 morning show and was asked why she chose to run.
Dean said people in the city need access to more resources, including a quality education and more things to do.
Asked if she believed a quality education is possible, considering the existing educational system, she said she did and went on to say.
Morning show host Greg Horne told Dean that he had recently visited Russellville and noted that the area around Arkansas Tech University was covered with businesses while the same is not true for the area around the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, which is in the Fourth Ward. He asked Dean what can be done to change that.
In her response to the question, Dean mentioned various laws that need to be changed and Horne asked her what those laws were.
