UPDATE 5:57 p.m.

Sources within the Pine Bluff Police Department have informed Deltaplex News that the 67-year-old shooter in Sunday morning’s homicide has been released from custody after questioning due to belief he acted in self defense.

Sources say it is believed the shooter fired in self defense during an attempted robbery. The shooter has not been identified.

A gun was found under the body of 22-year-old Norris Perry of West Memphis, who was killed in the exchange.

Sources at the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office confirm that the shooter was released and that their office supports the move made by the Pine Bluff Police Department.

A file on the case will still be reviewed at a later time to make sure appropriate action was taken with the release of the shooter, but at this time sources say that both the Pine Bluff Police Department and Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s office believe the shooter fired in self defense.

The deceased in Sunday morning’s shooting has been identified as 22-year-old Norris Perry from West Memphis Arkansas.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Pine Bluff Police Department is in the early stages of a homicide investigation.

Just after 9:30 A.M., officers responded to Camelot Apartments at 4001 Old Warren Road in reference to a shooting.

The officers located a 22-year-old male in the exterior stairwell of the apartment building, who had apparently been shot. A handgun was recovered near him.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers also made contact with a 67-year-old male who apparently shot the 22-year-old male.

The male was fully cooperative with officers and turned over his firearm.  He was taken into custody and is being interviewed at the detective office at the time of this release.  

The homicide is still under investigation and it is undetermined at this time if the shooter will be arrested.  His identity will be released, if he is booked into the Jefferson County jail.

The deceased male’s identity will be released once his family has been located and notified of his death.

The body will be taken to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.

This is the 22nd homicide for Pine Bluff in 2021.
