While schools in Pine Bluff have a majority of their students taking classes virtually, the Star City School District has most of its students in class on campus.

Star City School District Superintendent Jordan Frizzell appeared on the Oldies 101.3 morning show Thursday and said about 19 percent of students in his district, or about 300 in all chose the virtual option, a number he said was not as high as he would have expected.

He was asked about the swings in numbers of virtual verses in-class students in Southeast Arkansas.

Frizzell said students who chose to be in class have followed social distancing guidelines and that has allowed the district to run pretty smoothly. He said there have been a few isolated situations similar to other schools in the area that are dealing with COVID-19.

With virtual options available, Frizzell said things this year are better than they were last spring when schools were shut down completely.

He said enrollment in the district is about 1,400 this year, which is about 60 less than in May and attributed some of that to students who are being home schooled.
