UAPB Womens Hoops Drops Heartbreaker to Tulsa in Overtime 90-79

KATY, TX – Jelissa Reese knocked down a game-tying shot with 30 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime, but the UAPB women’s basketball team fell 90-79 to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Leonard E. Merrell Center Friday.

The Golden Lions  had three players score in double figures, led by Zaay Green, who had 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Maya Peat tacked on 15 points off the bench and Jelissa Reese chipped in as well with 13 points and two steals.

Coriah Beck pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 10 boards and turning them into seven second chance points.

UAPB forced 14 Tulsa turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Friday’s game. The Golden Lions turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Reese’s two steals led the way for UAPB.

How It Happened

UAPB got off to a slow start, falling behind 21-8 at the end of the first quarter.

UAPB then cut the Golden Hurricane lead to 28-19 before going on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Green, to narrow its deficit to 28-27. The Golden Lions kept the rally going and overtook the Golden Hurricane on a layup from Green with 02:10 left for a 33-31 halftime advantage. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring 18 of its 25 points close to the basket.

UAPB continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Reese, to expand its lead further to 43-35 with 7:49 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Hurricane had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Golden Lions still entered the fourth quarter with a 59-58 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 26 points in the paint.

Tulsa proceeded to take a 74-70 lead before UAPB went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Reese’s jumper, to seize a 76-74 lead with 2:27 to go in the fourth. The Golden Hurricane then fought back to even things up at 77-77 and send the game to overtime. UAPB got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 18 total points.

Tulsa then took control in overtime and won 90-79.
