UAPB Volleyball: Fortson Earns Preseason All-SWAC Honors

Pine Bluff, AR. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s volleyball team, for the second consecutive season under head coach Gabrielle Floyd, had a player named to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) All-Conference teams, announced by the league Friday afternoon. Junior Laila Fortson leads the charge for the Lady Lions as the lone second-team selection for the upcoming season.

Laila Fortson dominated at the middle blocker position for the Lady Lions a season ago. Fortson appeared in 27 matches, starting in all of them and playing in 98 sets.

Offensively, Fortson returns to the team second in kills with 163. Averaging 1.7 kills per set, Fortson accumulated a hitting percentage of .239, which ranked 8th in the SWAC and first of all returning starters. She is also second on the team in service aces with 24, and total points with 226.0, averaging 2.31 per set. Defensively, Fortson returns as the leading blocker with 58.0 blocks last season, with an average of .59 blocks per set.

Fortson’s best outing came against Alcorn State, where she posted career highs 12 kills on 18 attacks for a hitting percentage of .556. Fortson posted a career high in blocks with five against Southern.
