UAPB Men’s Hoops: Williams scores 33 points in Golden Lions 80-74 victory against Alabama State

Montgomery, AL.- Rashad Williams collected 33 points to help lead the UAPB men’s basketball team over the Alabama State Hornets 80-74 on the road Saturday.

The Golden Lions had three players score in double figures, led by Williams, who had 33 points, six rebounds and two steals. Kylen Milton added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Joe French helped out with 10 points.

The UAPB offense was strong from three-point land, pouring in 13 threes on 31 attempts. Williams hit seven treys for the Golden Lions in the contest.

UAPB’s defense held Alabama State to only 34.2 percent shooting from the field, including 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Lions also limited Isaiah Range to 2-of-15 shooting and six points in the game.

How It Happened

After falling behind 31-29, UAPB went on a 7-0 run with 6:36 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Williams, to take a 36-31 lead. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 41-39 advantage. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 41 points.

Following intermission, UAPB kept widening that lead, expanding it to 62-59 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by French’s three, to grow the lead to 67-59 with 6:35 to go in the contest. The Hornets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 80-74 win. UAPB got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 25 of its 39 total points.
