As she graduates from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff with a degree in hospitality and tourism management, Trenay Hayes is excited to see what the future has in store.

“Knowing that I’ve finally graduated is kind of a bittersweet moment,” she said. “I finally achieved something I’ve been working toward for four and a half years. At the same time, I’m leaving behind this life I’ve created to start an unknown journey. The fear of not knowing what’s next is definitely there, but then again, I am so excited to embark on this new chapter of my life.”

Hayes, who has been interested in cooking and travelling since she was a child, said choosing her major was a “no-brainer.”

“Hospitality and tourism have always been interesting to me,” she said. “This industry offers something for everyone, and I believe those who major in this area can easily find a job they actually love. There are many diverse opportunities, and it’s important to remember that jobs in this industry will always be available.”

During her education at the UAPB Department of Human Sciences, Hayes said she has most appreciated the relationships she built with fellow students and faculty members.

“My advisors and teachers have thoroughly shaped who I am,” she said. “They gave me access to the necessary tools and equipment I needed to achieve success and have made me more appreciative. I believe our department in particular has a lot of educators devoted to the success of their students.”

During her education, Hayes was an active member of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality – she participated in its conferences, completed a six-month leadership program and was awarded a scholarship by the organization. Outside of her academic studies, she was a member of the Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South (M4).

“The advice I would give to new students is to try new things and join clubs – this is how you get to know your teachers and fellow students,” she said. “This will also allow you to access networking opportunities that you wouldn’t have known about otherwise.”

Now that she has completed her degree, Hayes is eager to put her knowledge and experience to use and enter the workforce.

Dr. Suzzette Shaw Goldmon, assistant professor and program coordinator for UAPB’s hospitality and tourism management program, said Hayes is not only a great student, but that she has the dynamic personality that someone working in hospitality and tourism needs.

“I have seen Trenay mature in the last three years, and she is indeed ready to represent UAPB and the School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences in a mighty way. I expect her career to soar. I will miss this awesome student.”
