UAPB FOOTBALL ADDS TO COACHING STAFF, NAMES DEREK ROSE LINEBACKER COACH

PINE BLUFF, AR.– The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff head football coach Alonzo Hampton announced the addition of Derek Rose to the Golden Lions staff.

Rose, a player’s coach, that brings strong recruiting ties in the Louisiana and Texas area, along in the junior college rankings.

Rose joins the Golden Lions after a brief stint at Blinn College and Texas Southern as offensive assistant and linebacker coach. Before heading to Houston, Rose served as inside linebackers coach at Millsaps College. In his lone season in Jackson, Rose took an unproven group and turned them into a productive unit for a defense that improved in every team defensive category over the 2022 season. Prior to joining the staff at Millsaps, Rose served as the University of Fort Lauderdale outside linebackers coach & recruiting coordinator.

Prior to coaching in the college ranks, Rose started his coaching career in his hometown New Orleans, La at Landry-Walker high school. He served as linebacker’s coach from (2016-2018). While there he was a part of a 13-2 5A State Championship team which was the first in school history. From there he took over as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Sophie B Wright Charter from (2018-2020). Rose helped guide the school to its first ever winning season (6-4), district title and playoff appearance. In 2018 the defense gave up an average of 7 points per game during district play, Rose helped mentor a school record of eight players being selected to the all-district team while one earning District Defensive MVP.

Rose was a standout linebacker at Northwestern State. As a sophomore he was selected to the Phil Steele All-American Team. His 145 tackles ranked 14th nationally and was the most at NSU since 1991. Rose became the first sophomore since 2000 (All-pro Terrence McGee) to earn All- American honors. Voted team defensive MVP by teammates.

As a Junior Rose was named to the Associated Press All-American team, A Buck Buchanan Award Finalist as well as a 3x player of the week selectee. Voted team captain and defensive MVP by teammates.

In 2012 Rose was named to the preseason Buck Buchanan award watch list, All-conference and All-Louisiana team after 102 tackles, 7 Tfls, 4 PBU’s & 1 FF. Voted team captain and MVP by teammates.

A native of New Orleans, La., Rose earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Northwestern State in December 2012.
