UAPB Baseball Sweeps Alcorn St. In Weekend Series

GAME 1 | UAPB 19, Alcorn State 2
LORMAN, Miss. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff sweeps Alcorn St. in a three-game series this weekend on the road in conference play, as the Golden Lions stretch their winning streak to five games.

Senior Jacob Riordan was dominant on Saturday, punching out eight Alcorn State hitters over five innings of work to help lead the UAPB Golden Lions over the Braves 19-2.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Riordan tossed five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and walking five for UAPB. Junior Peyton Niemann also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Lions, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Senior Brandon Simon led the way offensively for the Golden Lions, going 3-for-5 in the ballgame with two doubles, a walk, and four RBI. Sophomore Carlos Rodriguez-Velez furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-6 with a double and three RBI. Junior Drew Cates also chipped in, going 2-for-2 for UAPB with two walks and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. UAPB’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of junior Aiden Martinez.

The Braves failed to push any runs across before the Golden Lions offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. UAPB managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the score to 6-0 in favor of the Golden Lions.

Alcorn State narrowed UAPB’s lead to 6-1 before the Golden Lions stretched the advantage to 14-1 in the third inning. The Golden Lions bats heated up in the inning, scoring eight runs, including a three-run double off the bat of Simon and a two-run double from Velez.

UAPB kept the Braves scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Golden Lions scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Cates, bringing the UAPB advantage to 18-1.

Alcorn State got within 18-2 until the Golden Lions scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 19-2. UAPB scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Lawrence Noble. The score remained 19-2 for the rest of the game, as the Golden Lions coasted to the win.
GAME 2 | UAPB 6, Alcorn State 3

UAPB rallied from down 3-2 in the seventh inning to take down the Alcorn State Braves 6-3 Saturday.

Junior Jordan Jones got the win out of the bullpen for UAPB. The right-hander went three shutout innings, giving up three hits, no walks and striking out one. Senior Brandon Little started the ballgame and went six innings, surrendering three runs, two earned, on four hits, walking three and striking out five.

In the batter’s box, the Golden Lions were paced by junior Lawrence Noble, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. UAPB got an RBI single from Noble, scoring junior Grant Devecsery from first base.

The game remained tied until the fifth inning, when the Golden Lions got going again on offense. UAPB pushed across a run on Noble’s two-out RBI double, which brought the Golden Lions lead to 2-1.

UAPB’s lead had disappeared by the time the eighth inning came around and turned into a 3-2 Alcorn State advantage, when the Golden Lions re-gained control at 5-3.

UAPB held the Braves without a run before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Noble crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Golden Lions, bringing UAPB advantage to 6-3. The score remained 6-3 for the rest of the game, as the Golden Lions held on for the win.

GAME 3 | UAPB 11, Alcorn St. 5

Senior Andre Greene had everything working on Sunday, striking out eight Alcorn State hitters over seven innings of work to help propel the Golden Lions over the Braves 11-5.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Greene tossed seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits and walking one for UAPB.

At the plate, the Golden Lions were paced by junior B Mican, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a walk and three RBI. Junior Grant Devecsery put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior Ben Van Maanen also contributed for UAPB, putting together zero hits in two trips to the plate while adding three walks and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions scored in six different innings on the way to the win. UAPB broke a 3-3 tie and took the lead for good at 5-3 in the sixth inning on Devecsery’s one-out two-run double.
