Garbage collection rates in Pine Bluff are going up immediately as a result of a clause in the city’s contract with Waste Management.

According to a resolution adopted by the Pine Bluff City Council during their meeting Monday, the residential rate will increase from $17.60 per month per occupied unit to $18.48 per month and the commercial rate may increase 5-percent over the rate for 2020.

Council member Bruce Lockett was asked about the increase and said this

The resolution provides that rates may be altered annually based on an agreement tied to the Consumer Price Index and city ordinances require that the cost of collection and the amount received from customers be sufficient to cover the costs of the contract to the city.

Two appointments to the Advertising and Promotion Commission that were on the agenda for the meeting Monday were tabled by a vote by six members of the council.

Current members of the commission had voted to reappoint Rosie Thomas Pettigrew to a four-year term and to appoint John M. Lawson to a four-year term replacing William Moss, whose term had expired but the council said hold up.

Council member Lockett, who made the motion to table the appointments, explained why to Deltaplex News.

Council Members Lloyd Holcomb Jr. and Steven Shaner cast the two votes to let the appointments stand while council members Lockett, Steven Mays, Glen Brown Jr., Ivan Whitfield, Joni Alexander and Glen Brown Sr., all voted to table the appointments.
