According to the Sheridan Headlight Newspaper over a month ago, the Sheridan Police Department began installing cameras along the public roadways in Sheridan. Although just nine of the proposed 10 have been installed so far, Sheridan Police Chief Jason Teague said the cameras have already proved to be instrumental in solving crime.

“We’ve recovered a couple of stolen vehicles and made a couple of arrests,” Teague said. The newspaper added that cameras also help aid in solving a crime that recently occurred at Tractor Supply, resulting in another arrest.

Teague reiterated that the cameras are not being used to monitor traffic, but are instead being used for their stated purpose to crack down on thefts in the city.

Sheridan had a rash of breaking and entering vehicles in the city limits and the cameras are being used to curtail that crime and bring those responsible to justice. Teague added that the camera also helps aid in situations such as Amber Alerts. The way the system works is that each vehicle that passes through is photographed and identified. If the vehicle’s information has been entered into the system as stolen or a vehicle of interest, Sheridan Police Officers are notified within seconds that it had been spotted by a specific camera, allowing the officers to take action.

In addition to the city of Sheridan, Grant County Sheriff’s department was mentioned to have also implemented the cameras across their county. Not all cameras have been installed for each organization but Teague was mentioned being confident that they will prove to be just as effective as the current cameras running.
